Institutions in Brunei Darussalam, whether government or private, must be ready to assimilate the concept of "adapt and adjust" to open up opportunities for autistic individuals and their families in the development of country, an education top official said yesterday.

Datin Paduka Dyg Apsah bte Hj Abdul Majid, Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education acknowledged that there is still room for improvement in upgrading the necessary provisions or services to autistic people.

She was speaking during the World Autism Awareness Day 2010 organised by the Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources Brunei Darussalam (SMARTER Brunei).

The event was held at RIMBA II Primary School in Gadong with the theme "Inclusive Development".

"The society as the stakeholder needs to continue to adapt and adjust to enable autistic individuals and their families to join the rest of the society in developing the country," said Datin Paduka Dyg Apsah.

"Two-way approach between the society (as service provider) and the autistic community (as agent of change) must be used in concert to create a 'barrier-free society' and an inclusive development," she added.

The Permanent Secretary said the society is tasked with the role of creating an 'inclusive' environment and this includes the involvement of autistic individuals and their families and those with an interest in autism and in designing a strategic plan, core development and source allocation to empower their abilities.

"This needs certain steps (efforts) to be taken towards the acceptance of autistic individuals by the whole society," she said.

Datin Paduka Dyg Apsah said this (effort) is parallel to that of SMARTER Brunei, which began small and then developed into an organisation comparable to centres in Canada, Australia and United Kingdom.

"I hope SMARTER will continue their role to provide programmes that focus on the need of autistic individuals in education, training and social activities to prepare them towards an inclusive development," she concluded.
